Ideas for creating a living room interior design you will love

"Ideas for creating a living room interior design you will love!"

Great living room interior design starts with an understanding of how you want to use the space. For most of us, the living room needs to be a relatively versatile place. It’s the room where we kick back and take a nap, read a book, or watch a movie. It’s also the place where we host guests and chat late into the evening.
Your living room might be a more formal, dedicated space (as was common in days gone by) if you happen to have a family room or finished basement that can accommodate some of your more casual pursuits. Consider your reality and how you will most likely use your living room.
As you move into design mode one of the first things you’ll want to do is direct your furniture arrangement toward a focal point. For more on doing this successfully see my page on furniture arrangement. It’s important to understand that even if you do not have an architectural focal point to work with in your living room space, you can create one through other means!

Naturally, good lighting is vital to any living room interior design. If possible, include recessed lights in the ceiling (controlled by a dimmer switch) for good ambient as well as mood lighting. Place floor or table lamps next to sofas and chairs to create appropriate illumination for reading. Wall sconces can be a nice touch in a living room design when you use them to flank a prominent piece of art work above a fireplace, for example.

The fabrics and style of furniture you choose for your living room interior design should reflect your personal style direction whether that be traditional, contemporary, country or transitional, for example. For more on this topic, check out my interior style page. Make your living room style complementary to the rest of your home so there is visual continuity.

If you plan to have a television in your living room consider positioning it in a way that does not detract from the style of the room. Consider using a piece of furniture to house it such as an armoire. Alternately, you might consider wall mounting a flat screen monitor over your fireplace in place of a mirror or artwork. There is nothing more deflating that to walk into a nicely designed living room and seeing a bunch of electronic equipment and cords exposed.
However you choose to integrate a TV into your living room interior design, try to keep the effect as tidy and streamlined as possible so it does not detract from your style.
Other Tips:
• Use different types of seating for a more sophisticated look. The sofas and chairs don’t always have to be a matching set. They just need to coordinate.
• A dramatic ceiling chandelier can add sparkle to a formal living room.
• Consider a large leather ottoman for double duty as a coffee table or extra seating.
